As some of you may know, the softball team usually puts on a fun and exciting event called SWING FOR CANCER, benefitting various organizations and people from the community. If you’re not aware, we began hosting a cancer awareness event where student-athletes and various coaches come and try to hit off of one of our pitchers and is open to the public. Last year we even brought Danielle Lawrie, former University of Washington and Canadian Olympic team member, in to be our celebrity pitcher. This year, SWING FOR CANCER will be held during the fall semester and will be benefitting the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation.

The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation is a non-profit organization matching kids with pediatric brain tumors with high school and college athletic teams in hopes of improving their quality of life through support and friendship. Our team is going on our fourth year with our adoptee from the foundation, Heather Braswell. When we first adopted Heather she was in elementary school and was very shy. Over the past three years, Heather has opened up tremendously and is a regular in the Gator Softball dugout on the weekends. Back in October, Heather and I went to a Friends of Jaclyn event with the UCF softball team and their adoptee. Since then, Heather has inspired me to put on a similar event here at UF to benefit Friends of Jaclyn and also give her a fun day with the other student-athletes at UF.

The baseball team has also recently adopted a child from the foundation. His name is Nicholas and he was also at the UCF softball event with his family. He is younger than Heather and I can already tell how much he looks up to the baseball players. The SWING FOR CANCER event will most likely involve Nick and the baseball team as well.

Keep checking back for updates on the event. The content for this year is still being decided as far as who will be doing the pitching and who will be doing the hitting. Possibly having the baseball team be a part of the event will add a new element to SWING FOR CANCER that previous patrons may not have seen before. I am really excited for the event and I hope when the time comes, all you Gator fans will be there to support! Go Gators!
