OH OH O-O I GOTTA GO!!!!!!

Before the final gun goes off for the last race, a lone Gator stands in front of the team and brings everyone together. “Oh, Oh O-O” he yells and in unison the team responds by repeating “Oh, Oh O-O.” At that moment everyone in the facility knows that the Gators are in the building. “OH OH O-O” is the start of the trademark song the Gator track and field teams chant before the final race, the 1600m relay, is run. That is the moment when both the women’s and men’s team come together to cheer on their teammates and help them finish the race. The 1600m relay is arguably the most exciting and competitive race of the competition. Everyone is usually tired and it is one of the hardest races to run. Each member of the relay has to run 400 meters and get the baton around the track safely. The song gives us a sense of hope and motivation to help us around the track. Senior sprinter Alishea Usery says, “When they sing the song it really means something to us. In a sense it feels like the team has our back and we don’t want to let them down and we gotta go.” The song has traditionally been solely for the men’s relay, but recently at the 2012 SEC Indoor competition the team started singing the song for the ladies for the first time ever. In that situation the team title was on the line and we wanted to give them an extra boost. Since then it has started a new tradition and now it is sung for both teams.

While researching information about this song I found out that one of the co-writers to the song is new coach, Erin Tucker. He told me that the song dates back to 1995, and the song was originally created during a hard fall training period and continued into the indoor season when the men’s team began to sing it as motivation to finish the meets. The team leader usually waits until it is real quiet in the building to make sure they have all the attention. Throughout the song the team repeats after the leader.

OH, Oh O O I Gotta Go,

OH, Oh, I Gotta Go,

O O I gotta go

*We have to get out and run

I used to drive a Cadillac
Now I’m flying Captain Jack
I used to drive a Cadillac
Now I’m flying Captain Jack

*Captain Jack was the name of the plane that they used to fly to the SEC meet.

It was like they were upgrading from a car to a plane.

OH, Oh

O O I Gotta Go,

OH, Oh, I Gotta Go, O O I gotta go

Momma, momma don’t you cry The Gator team ain’t gonna die momma, momma don’t you cry The Gator team ain’t gonna die

*Don’t worry we are going to be okay we are going to bring it home

OH, Oh

O O I Gotta Go,

OH, Oh, I Gotta Go,

O O I gotta go

O O I GOTTTA GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO (repeat slowly the second time)

Then everyone cheers and screams!!!! The gun then goes off.

Next time you are at a meet with the Gators listen for the song before the gun goes off. It won’t be hard to hear them. Now that you know the words, sing along and get the Gators ready to go. Stay tuned as the track and field programs prepare for the championship season as the SEC meet is right around the corner.
