Welcome to “Fresh Faces”, a new segment that allows you to get to know some of the Gator freshman athletes. I will be asking different freshman athletes various questions from how they got into their sport to what their favorite ice cream flavor is. This way the gator nation will get to know the newbies on the field. This week I had the pleasure of sitting down with Johnny Townsend, a freshman punter on the football team. Here’s what he had to say…

MF: So Johnny, when’s your birthday?
JT: February 14
MF: Where are you from?
JT: Orlando, Florida.
MF: What’s your favorite part about living in Orlando?
JT: I love being in a big city, there’s always so much to do.
MF: Do you have any siblings?
JT: Yes, I have an older brother that goes here and a younger brother that is in high school.
MF: How did you get into football?
JT: I don’t know… I started out with flag football then moved to tackle and I’ve been playing ever since.
MF: Did you always start off as a punter?
JT: No, I didn’t start punting until my freshman year of high school. I was always the kid that could kick the furthest. I wasn’t serious about punting until the end of my sophomore year.
MF: What made you want to be a gator?
JT: I’ve always grown up a fan. A lot of things went into my decision…both my parents went here, my brother goes here, it’s close to home, and it’s in the SEC.
MF: How was it like running out of the tunnel for the first time?
JT: It was the best experience of my life! It’s crazy, the adrenaline rush… it will never get old. I’ve been dreaming of that my entire life.
MF: What was your reaction when you got the news that you were starting and not redshirting like you had planned?
JT: I was very excited. I knew that I was prepared because I had been working hard.
MF: What was going through your head during the first punt?
JT: Nothing really… I wasn’t nervous! I was in my own little world and I was focused on the ball.
MF: As a freshman, what has been the biggest struggle so far?
JT: Time management
MF: What do you expect from the rest of the season? Do you have any collegiate goals?
JT: As a team, I expect us to win every game the rest of the season. Personally, I expect to start the rest of the season and I would love to be an Academic All – American.
MF: Any dreams of going to the NFL?
JT: Yes!
MF: What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
JT: Coffee, but ironically I don’t like the drink.
MF: If you could have any celebrity play you in a movie, who would it be?
JT: Will Ferrell; he’s my favorite actor.
MF: Where is your favorite place to travel?
JT: I love going to the Bahamas.
MF: Do you have any fun facts or hobbies about yourself?
JT: My hobbies include fishing and just being outside. A fun fact about me is that I’m an eagle scout.
